certified translation services

Quality certifications create reference standards for the operations carried out in the various sectors of activity. For example, in the field of Chinese translation and interpreting, entrusting a project to non-certified translators can have disastrous consequences. These consequences are even passed on to a global scale when, in 2013, a sign language interpreter simply “excluded” the deaf from the world from the speech at Nelson Mandela’s memorial by signing “hours of absurdity”. The experts demonstrated the absence of movement of the lips of the interpreter and his lack of body language. These two gaps made speech impossible to follow. The impostor rejected the fault on his schizophrenia, explaining that he “saw angels.” However, this disaster could have been avoided by entrusting the interpretation to a certified professional. Do not panic, this week we explain to you why and especially how to have certified translations!

How Can I Get a Translation Certified?

Getting a quality certificate is a good start, yet you have to find the one you need. For written documents, for example, there are 3 types:

1. The basic certification of a translation at YBD includes a letter from the agency, written on letterhead, stating that the translation is correct and complete. This certification is accepted by all administrations, including the Ministry of the Civil Affairs, the Courts and the Passport Office.

2. Sworn translation is used for documents required by public and governmental authorities. In this case, a notary authenticates and certifies the translation by means of an affidavit (affidavit). The translator signs a written declaration and takes an oath before a notary, asserting that, to his knowledge, the translation is complete and in conformity with the original document. The translation is then certified by a stamp.

3. Legalization (or apostille) is required for documents intended for foreign authorities. It is a sworn translation verified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs so that it is recognized by the authorities of the foreign country. The Ministry takes an average of two weeks to certify the documents. However, in an emergency, YBD will do its utmost to have your documents legalized as soon as possible.

If one goes on to discuss the issue of interpreting without certification, it is important to know that at the Court, the lack of certification of the interpreter can compromise the validity of a testimony. In Russia, for example, in July 2015, the lawyer of a woman suspected of stabbing her husband argued that her confessions had been considered out of context, due to an imprecise translation by non-certified interpreters. Bouchère, she allegedly claimed to have killed her “professionally” before her lawyer questioned the translation given by the interpreters concerning her client’s professional occupation.

Requesting a quality certification means ensuring that the translated documents or the delivered interpretation are recognized by the administrations. This saves time while building trust among professionals in situations where information is critical.
