Generally you have to focus on a strategy of equivalence that actually involves paraphrasing. It means that, once you have understood the meaning, you should say it with other sentences that mix up the sense together. For example, if you don’t find an equivalent in the target language for the English expression prepare the ground you should paraphrase with “create a suitable situation for something to take place”.
